Camping is super fun and adventurous but something that can be hard is the packing away at the end. Unless you have a skilled qualification in packing awkward materials then you may find yourself struggling.
The best way to fold a groundsheet consists of creating even folds throughout that enable the finished fold to be the same size if not slightly smaller than the bag or box in which it is stored. Rolling a groundsheet into a the tent and into a bag is better as it prevents damage.
In this article we are going to cover the different ways in which you can fold a ground sheet and why storing it properly is important.
How To Fold A Ground Sheet
As a camper, how neatly you fold your groundsheet is almost as important as having one in the first place. There are two main ways to fold your groundsheet. My camp buddies and I call them:
- The Rectangular-Fold Method
- and The Roll-Fold Method
Let’s take a look at each one.
The Rectangular-Fold
From my experience, this is the easiest and most efficient way. This method will serve you better when you’re folding on a flat surface or the floor. Also, it’s easier when you have a partner to help you with the folding, especially when you have a big groundsheet. The method involves 4 distinct steps.
Step 1: The first step is the easiest. Lay your groundsheet on a surface (preferably flat) or the ground. This is so you can have a good look at all of its four edges. Those edges will help you fold your groundsheet more easily.
Note: You can choose to start your folding from anywhere. Your starting point won’t affect the end result. You can start from the sides or the bottom. Whatever works for you will do the trick.
- Step 2:Here, you need to align the two bottom edges to the two top edges to create an alignment.
- Step 3: After aligning the edges, you need to fold them into a rectangular shape. Your rectangle will look a lot longer than the usual one. If your groundsheet happens to be much bigger in size and you have a partner, it shouldn’t pose you too much trouble as both of you can fold together from each side and still have your long rectangular shape.
Note: Don’t forget to adjust the edges and straighten out all wrinkles.
- Step 4: The final step is to place your groundsheet on the floor or a flat surface and fold the left and right sides into the middle. Your groundsheet should have a short rectangular shape at the end.
The rectangular-fold method is the perfect way to fold your groundsheets. While you might have a better way, this method will guarantee you a well-placed groundsheet without crooked edges. If you want something different, you might want to try the second method on my list.
The Roll-Fold
This method is quite similar to the one above as it also consists of 4 key steps, but takes a different shape in the end.
Step 1: Place your groundsheet on the floor or on a flat surface where you can have a clear look at its four corners.
Step 2: Align the two top edges with your two bottom edges. Ensure they’re straight and well-matched.
Step 3: Fold them into a long rectangular shape. If your sheets are too big then it’s best to do it with a friend or partner. Don’t forget to straighten all the wrinkles out until they look neat enough.
Step 4: Rather than folding the left and right sides into the middle like the other method, you have to roll it from one end to the other. After rolling, your groundsheet should look like a pack of a heavy-duty refuse sack. Then you can put it in your bag nicely without stress.
Why You Need To Fold A Ground Sheet
A groundsheet isn’t like your bed sheets where you can fold as you wish and throw them into your cupboard until the next time you need them. The consequences of an unfolded bed sheets are having less room in your cupboard and sleeping on crooked sheets. However, it’s quite different for a groundsheet, and can be pretty bad depending on its material.
If your groundsheet is an open type one, you’re less likely to have problems other than a crooked sheet since they’re made of textured mesh. However, if it’s a close weave and made of nylon, you could have real problems if you don’t fold them properly after use.
A nylon groundsheet might be light in weight and water-resistant but it also tears easily. Using a torn groundsheet is like sleeping on a bare floor. This is because insects, rain, and germs are likely to get in while you’re asleep, thereby putting you at risk. Hence, properly folding your groundsheet is necessary.
How Folding Prevents Ground Sheet Damage
Properly folding your groundsheets will prevent it from having unnecessary tears and stains that can occur without your knowledge. A well-folded groundsheet will take less room and is less likely to catch a nail or a sharp edge. Moreover, anything worth folding is likely to be well kept and will have little chance of getting torn or stained.
How Folding makes Ground Sheet Easier To Store
This applies to all “foldables” and not just groundsheets. It’s easier to store a folded item than an unfolded one because it saves space.
Also, since you went through the trouble of folding your groundsheet you’re more likely to remember where you kept it, unlike when you wrap it in your hands and dump it at the first place you can find.
Does A Ground Sheet Have a Bag It Needs To Fit In?
Yes, it does. You need a bag for your sheet especially if you fold it regularly. And while you may be wondering if it’s necessary to purchase one or not, you should consider the simplicity that comes from having a storage bag to store your camping equipment.
Generally, products that have their own bags are not only easier to store but also to find. Moreover, most groundsheet bags are lightweight, water-resistant, and can carry heavy loads.
What Are The Benefits Of A GroundSheet Bag?
You can derive a ton of benefits from owning a groundsheet bag.
- A groundsheet bag will make the transportation of your groundsheet from home to its place of use very easy.
- They’re made of lightweight materials so they’re not heavy but can withstand the weight of your groundsheet.
- It will also protect your groundsheet from any external damage that could occur.
- They offer durability and water resistance. Hence, they can withstand harsh weather conditions.
